October 15 is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

We would like to remember and honor all babies lost to stillbirth, miscarriages, SIDS, or any other cause at any point during pregnancy or infancy.

For Kallie and Adam Bergeaux of Krotz Springs, LA, September 24, 2014 started off like many other days! They were busy raising a son and a daughter and expecting their third child any day. They were both surprised when Kallie started having contractions, as the scheduled cesarean was a week away.

Kallie had a very normal, healthy pregnancy, and when her labor started it felt much like her first two pregnancies. She wasn’t alarmed by it, but her doctor instructed her to report to Opelousas General Health System so that her labor could be monitored. When she arrived, they started her on medication to stop the contractions.

The nurses monitored her progress and checked in regularly. The medication to stop her labor was unsuccessful. Her labor progressed and at the time of the next check, the large quantity of blood present upon examination alerted her care team to notify her doctor. Kallie had to be rushed to surgery for cesarean delivery.

By the time she gave birth, her baby girl wasn’t breathing. The baby was immediately placed on a ventilator and rushed to Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Lafayette. Because of the hemorrhage Kallie suffered, she had to receive a blood transfusion. She later learned that she had a placenta abruption, which is a serious condition in which the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus before birth. When this happens, the baby does not get enough oxygen and nutrients in the womb.

Kallie and her husband, Adam were given regular reports on the condition of their baby girl Brynn and never lost hope of her survival. Unfortunately, because of the oxygen insufficiency that she experienced prior to birth, Brynn passed away just one day and a few hours after being born. Thankfully, Kallie was well enough to make the trip to Lafayette for her and Adam to say goodbye to Brynn.

In an effort to manage their grief and honor their baby girl, Kallie and Adam decided to bring hope and comfort to new parents by gifting the first baby girl born on or after September 24 at Opelousas General Health System each year with a beautiful hand-made gift box filled with dresses, gowns, ribbons, a rosary, and other baby essentials, Kallie says, “It doesn’t matter what faith or religion the baby is born into, a rosary can always bring comfort and hope to a family welcoming a new baby.”

The Bergeauxs have been gifting new families in memory of Brynn for the past 7 years. They have received wonderful feedback from the recipients, bringing them overwhelming comfort and joy.

This year, Tracey Phillips and her husband Larrianaccepted the gift for their new baby girl, LaMyia. Tracey was deeply touched and very appreciative of the box of treasures. Tracey said, “I’m so grateful to receive this gift for my baby girl and cannot imagine what Kallie and her family went through. Losing a child must be the deepest hurt there is. I can see how honoring her daughter each year brings them peace.”
