The Opelousas General Health System Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications. 2020 marks the fourteenth year that the OGHS Foundation has been providing scholarships to St. Landry Parish citizens. “We understand that the educational opportunities for individuals interested in healthcare may not be realized due to financial constraints. Because we believe that all individuals of St. Landry Parish who are academically qualified for admittance to an accredited college or vocational school should have the financial means to attain their goals, we are offering scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare,” said Tracey Antee, Foundation Director.

This scholarship fund may be used for courses to further education in medical fields such as nursing, respiratory therapy, radiologic technology, medical records, medical office assistant, patient care technician and other healthcare related fields as approved by the scholarship committee. Scholarship amounts may include partial or full payment of tuition at Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA), Louisiana State University at Eunice (LSUE), University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) or South Louisiana Community College – TH Harris Campus and Lafayette campuses only for the approved healthcare related programs.

Qualifications for eligibility include:

  • Must be a resident of St. Landry Parish
  • Must have applied to one of the above-listed institutions for one of the approved healthcare-related programs

Scholarships are awarded upon the basis of academic background, probability of graduation, maturity, financial status, community involvement, and availability of resources and the needs of Opelousas General Health System. The amount of the scholarships will vary with each recipient based upon the number of applicants, the amount of funding available and your chosen field.

The law firm of Morrow, Morrow, Ryan, Bassett & Haik (MMRBH) is also offering scholarships to students of St. Landry and Evangeline Parishes. The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage applicants to pursue a degree in their field of study and upon graduation to seek employment within these two parishes. The MMRBH scholarship award is $2,500. Scholarships are based on academic background (must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA), maturity of the applicant, financial need, community involvement, the availability of resources, funding and the applicants’ chosen career field. Applicants for the MMRBH scholarship may qualify for TOPS.

The OGHS Foundation administers the MMRBH scholarship program.

All scholarships will be awarded in May. The deadline to turn in applications is March 27, 2020.
