The morning after Elizabeth “Liz” Chatelain, 55, enjoyed her son’s wedding, she recalls being full of joy and happiness. She never imagined the celebration would be followed by a medical emergency. What began as mild abdominal discomfort quickly intensified, turning into alarming pain that made it clear she needed immediate care.

Liz decided to seek help at her hometown hospital in Evangeline Parish. She had lived with a small hernia for over a decade, and it had never caused her trouble. But her medical exam revealed the hernia had suddenly become life threatening. Liz was diagnosed with an incarcerated hernia and urgently needed surgical intervention to restore blood flow to her intestines.

She was transported by ambulance to the main campus at Opelousas General where a team was assembled for an immediate surgical consultation. Liz describes the experience as “seamless”.

“From the moment I arrived in the emergency room, everyone was attentive and compassionate,” Liz shared. “They made me feel very comfortable and very seen. I knew I was in very capable hands.”

General surgeon M. Andrew Sicard, M.D., performed the corrective operation robotically, not long after Liz arrived in Opelousas.

Her positive experience continued throughout her recovery. Liz was struck by the kindness and dedication of every team member she encountered - from environmental services and food and nutrition staff to the clinical team at her bedside.

Liz also praised Dr. Sicard, describing him as “awesome, with a GREAT bedside manner.” She appreciated his clear, professional approach and the way he took time to explain everything, helping her feel safe and confident throughout the process.

A dedicated educator for 34 years, Liz is already back doing what she loves. “My recovery has been very good,” she said. “I am grateful for a successful outcome, and for the compassion and care that carried me through a frightening moment.”

Dr. Sicard works at Opelousas General Surgical Associates alongside his colleagues, Eric Amy, M.D., Brooks Lowrey, M.D., Joshua Landes, M.D. and Caitlin Cassidy, FNP-C. The group proudly serves a multi-parish area.
