    • My Health Patient Portal
      Information regarding your recent visit is available online via MyHealth Patient Portal. Your health information is private and secure and completely FREE. Your visit will be available 96 hours after your appointment.
    • Assistance to Persons Exhibiting Communication Disorders
      Occasionally, a patient may exhibit a hearing, speech, or language disorder. A mechanism to assist patients who are hearing impaired or deaf, and/or use sign language as their primary means of communication is available in order to provide quality care to these patients.

      Persons who are unable to speak, or who use a language other than English, may require assistance also. If you think that you or a member of your family, may be in need of special communication assistance while you are in the hospital, please advise your nurse who will contact the department of communication disorders for the appropriate person.

      Examples of available services may include sign language interpreters, French, Spanish, Vietnamese interpreters, telephone devices for amplification, assistive listening devices, telephonic devices for the deaf (TDDs), and augmentative/assistive communication devices and techniques (eg., gestures, writing, communication boards) for persons with expressive communication impairments.
    • Assistance to Persons With Other Handicapping Conditions
      Persons with visual impairments needing assistance in reading important medical/hospital information should acknowledge this need to their nurse. A staff member or volunteer may be able to assist the patient in securing the information needed.

      Persons with physical and/or other handicapping conditions who may require special assistance while a patient at OGHS should inform the nurse of your need. OGHS will make every reasonable effort within the present structural limitations and staff resources to meet the needs of the patient.
    • Chaplain Services
      Volunteer priests and ministers are available to all patients and their families.

      Please contact your nurse or patient representative to request these services should you need them during your hospitalization.

      Catholic communion is provided by volunteer Eucharistic ministers.

      The Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990 is a law that gives you their right to make Advanced Directives. At OGHS, our policy is that any competent adult person may, at any time, make a written declaration directing the withholding or withdrawal of life sustaining procedures in the event such person should have a terminal or irreversible chance of recovery.

      It is your responsibility to notify your attending physician that you have made a living will or that you have a durable Power of Attorney for healthcare. It is your responsibility to provide OGHS with a copy of your Living Will. For more information contact the patient representative.
    • Voicing a Complaint/Concern/ Need (Guest Relations)
      We, the staff of OGHS, strive to assure all patients receive quality care. You, the patient, can play a vital role in assisting us to maintain and continually improve your services. If you have any questions or concerns contact the Patient Representative at Ext. 5644 Mon – Fri 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or ask your nurse for assistance. If your concern is not resolved, contact the Nursing Supervisor, Administrative Assistant or the Administrator.
    • Medications
      The effects of medications can be changed by certain foods, liquids, alcohol, or other drugs. lt is important for you to understand and know the facts about the medications you are taking and the guidelines for taking these drugs. Please ask the nurse, Clinical Pharmacist, and/or the Patient Representative for more information about the medications you are taking.
    • Legal Compliance
      Any acts of dishonesty or unethical behavior may also be reported to the Ethics Line at 1-800-340-5877.
    • LOPA

    • Overnight Room Rental
      Based on availability, rooms can be rented for overnight stay for family members. For information, contact the Patient Representative between 8:a.m. to 4:30 a.m. and the Nursing Supervisor after 4:30 p.m.
    • Personal Valuables
      It is understood and agreed that the hospital maintains a safe for the safe- keeping of money and valuables, and the hospital shall not be liable for the loss or damage to any money, jewelry, glasses, dentures, documents, furs, fur coats, and fur garments or any other articles of unusual value and small compass, unless placed therein, and shall not be liable for loss or damage to any other personal property, unless deposited with the hospital for safekeeping.

      Mail and flowers will be brought to your room as they arrive. Flowers are not allowed in the special care units. Any mail you receive after you leave will be forwarded to your home address.

    • Education
      Education provided to the community and our patients at Opelousas General Health System include:
      CPR Classes (Health Care Provider, Heart Saver & First Aid)
      The Education Department offers CPR classes every Monday, Tuesday at 8AM & 1PM, and on Wednesday at 8AM. Classes are approximately 3 hours in length and limited seating is available. Please call in advance to reserve your appointment at 337-594-3825 or 337-594-3801.
      Safe Sitter Courses (offered during summer vacation)
      The Education Department also offers 2-day Safe Sitter classes during summer while students are on school break. Safe Sitter is a medically-accurate, up-to-date babysitting course that teaches young teens (ages 11-13) life and safety skills. For more information, call the Education Department at 337-594-3801.
      Pre-Natal Classes
      The Labor & Delivery Department offers pre-natal classes every other month on Thursday's for 3 weeks at 6PM in the 3rd floor auditoium of our main campus. They are held in the months of February, April, June, August, October & December. Pre-registration is recommended. Please call Darlene at 948-5103. Education provided to the community and our patients at Opelousas General Health System include:
      Lactation Services
      OGHS has a staffed International, Board-Certified Lactation Consultant who offers inpatient and outpatient lactation consults for our breast-feeding patients. More information can be viewed under the "Women's Services" tab, or you can call Lauren David at 337-594-3804 or 337-948-3011 (Ext. 3960).

  • Regulatory
    • Telephone
      A telephone is provided for you in your room. Local calls can be made free of charge by dialing “9” and the number you wish to call. Long distance calls must be made collect or charged to your home phone. For long distance calls, dial “9” + “0” and ask to be connected with a long distance operator.
      For your convenience, you may receive incoming calls in your room from 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. daily. Outgoing calls may be made anytime. Pay phones are located in the hospital’s emergency center waiting room and in our east entrance.
    • Lost & Found
      If you think you have lost something, notify your nurse immediately. For information concerning lost items, please contact the housekeeping department at extension 3974.
    • Electrical Appliances
      Personal electrical appliances are forbidden due to electrical hazards. Your cooperation is appreciated.
    • Fire & Disaster Drills
      During your stay the hospital staff may have to practice a fire or disaster drill. Patients are not moved as part of any drill, so please do not be disturbed if you hear or see evidence of such a practice drill. If there is any danger for any reason, patients can rest assured they will be moved to safety immediately.
    • Smoking
      All campuses of OGHS are tobacco free as of January, 2009. This policy applies to everyone including employees, medical staff, volunteers, patients, visitors, vendors and contract staff. This includes hospital buildings, medical office buildings, OGHS leased or maintained parking lots, garage, grounds or sidewalks. It also includes hospital owned vehicles and any additional offsite OGHS locations.

    • Infection Control
      We strongly suggest that you WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN have your visitor wash their hands and insist that Staff wash their hands before and after patient contact. Be sure to follow physician and nurses instructions for eating the correct diet, taking medications, and wound care. Get up out of bed as soon as the doctor permits to prevent pneumonia.

    • Linen Policy
      Linen changes occur when needed or per request of the family. Soiled linen is to be changed as soon as possible. If you should need any extra linen (towels, etc.) ask the nursing assistant or nurse.
