George Adams, a 72-year-old retired construction superintendent, noticed blood in his stool, he initially believed it was a side effect of medication he was taking for a heart condition. However, after completing a Cologuard test and undergoing a diagnostic colonoscopy, it became clear that he needed specialized medical care.

Adams was referred to Opelousas General surgeon Dr. M. Andrew Sicard, a physician he already knew and trusted. Years earlier, Dr. Sicard had successfully performed another surgery on Adams, giving him the confidence that he was once again in capable hands.

Dr. Sicard performed a robot-assisted colon resection to remove a cancerous tumor. Adams was subsequently diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy as part of his treatment plan.

Reflecting on his experience, Adams expressed gratitude for the care he received at Opelousas General Health System.

“I was treated very well at Opelousas General,” he said. “The staff was very attentive to my needs, and everyone was very caring.”

He was especially appreciative of Dr. Sicard’s personal approach to patient care.

“Dr. Sicard is a great doctor,” Adams said. “He did an exceptional job with my surgery and even called me a few days later to check on me to see how I was doing. That is the first time I have ever had a doctor personally call to check on me. It meant a lot.”

Today, Adams continues his cancer treatment grateful for the care he received. He encourages others to pay attention to changes in their health and to seek medical attention when something does not seem right, emphasizing the importance of early detection and timely treatment.
