A Team Approach to Assist in Your Recovery

The Rehabilitation Center at Opelousas General Health System helps people re-enter the community and regain their highest level of functioning as quickly as possible after an accident or illness. One of the many specialized services offered at Opelousas General Health System South Campus, the Rehabilitation Center is located on the second floor of the hospital, in our self-contained inpatient unit.

Holistic Approach to Your Care

We take a multidisciplinary approach to your care. Your team is managed by the physiatrist, and includes you, family members, rehabilitation nurses, case managers/social workers, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists and dietitians.

Communication among caregivers is critical to a patient's well-being. Our team meets weekly to discuss each patient's progress. Based on the results of these discussions, treatment plans are adjusted and/or amended as necessary. Our program of treatment stresses family interaction and recognizes the importance of education as a support tool. Therefore, family members may be included in these meetings. Because family conferences, training and home evaluations are an integral part of successful rehabilitation treatment, they are routinely scheduled.

Achieving Independence

Upon admission to the Rehab Unit, each patient is thoroughly evaluated to determine treatment procedures and an individualized program is designed based on the patient's needs. This specialized program enables the individual to develop or recover their natural abilities to perform functional activities at the highest and safest level possible.

Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapy treatment program consists of helping you strengthen muscles and improve range of motion and coordination to increase your work tolerance and physical activity endurance. Depending on your needs, the Rehabilitation Center also can help you relearn how to perform activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and grooming tasks. If you are incapable of handling these tasks, you may be taught substitute methods involving adaptive equipment, splints, braces and the like.

Speech and Language Therapy

Our Speech and Language Therapy program can help assess communication, cognitive and/or wallowing function by a speech/language pathologist. An individualized treatment plan is developed and implemented with family involvement to provide the highest level of functional independence. Treatment activities may include expressive and receptive language tasks, verbal problem solving, reasoning, attention and organizational tasks, plus a variety of swallowing techniques – all designed to enhance your ability to function more independently.

Social Work

You will have an assigned social worker who will take the lead for your care. The social worker's responsibilities include referral intake, orientation procedures, counseling services and discharge coordination. The social worker remains available throughout the treatment procedure to respond to any questions or concerns that may arise.

Rehabilitation Nursing

The rehabilitation nursing staff encourages patients to provide as much care for themselves as possible. The staff works to ensure safety, comfort and patient independence.

Discharge

The rehabilitation team begins planning your smooth transition back to the community as soon as you arrive at the unit. Social workers, therapists, physicians and nurses coordinate discharge arrangements with family to ensure treatment benefits gained continue after discharge.

After Treatment

We recognize that rehabilitation does not end at discharge. Our staff develops a home care plan individualized to your needs. Referrals are often made to outpatient services, home health services and/or community resources to ensure you can continue to achieve your maximum level of independence after discharge. We are proud to serve the citizens of this area by providing comprehensive rehabilitation services.
