Stroboscopy

Video Stroboscopy
Opelousas General Health System offers State-of-the-Art technology in diagnosing voice and vocal disorders with the Laryngeal Stroboscopy. This equipment provides our Speech-Language Pathologist and Otolaryngologists with a convenient and powerful means of examining laryngeal anatomy and vocal fold physiology.

The vocal folds vibrate too rapidly to be observed by the unaided eye under continuous light. During stroboscopy, the vocal folds are illuminated with brief pulses of light which allows for detailed observation of vocal fold movement.

Stroboscopy can aid in early detection of laryngeal disease such as cancer. It is also invaluable in the diagnosis and treatment of voice disorders such as nodules, polyps and cysts. Most disorders of the voice are accompanied by constant or intermittent hoarseness. Vocal fold pathology varies greatly, but assessment with VideoStroboscopy assists proper diagnosis.

The examination requires no sedation and is almost as simple and painless as placing a tongue blade over the base of the tongue.
