Opelousas General Health System Receives Grant from
Susan G. Komen Acadiana Affiliate
June 15, 2011, (Opelousas, LA), Opelousas General Health System is one of 12 recipients to receive a grant from the Acadiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This is the fourth consecutive year that OGHS has been awarded a grant from Komen Acadiana.
Opelousas General Health System will use the $50.000 grant to provide education, free mammograms to qualified women and men, and a retreat for breast cancer survivors. “We are elated that Komen has chosen Opelousas General Health System again this year. We have seen first hand how this grant has helped uninsured women and men of this area detect early stages of cancer, said Carol Duplechain, Chair of the Paint the Town Pink campaign and grant writer. “This is truly fulfilling the mission of Komen in saving lives right here in St. Landry Parish”, she added.
Since 1999, the Acadiana Affiliate has granted over $2,323,000 to local organizations and the National Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program. Komen started when Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and launched the global breast cancer movement.
Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, Komen has invested $1 billion to fulfill this promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
Up to 75% of net proceeds raised by this Affiliate remains in the Acadiana community to fund community projects related to breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.
