The Acadiana Chapter of the American Cancer Society will hold the 2010 Relay for Life Event on Friday May 7, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at Opelousas High School.
The Relay For Life is the nationwide signature fund raising activity for the American Cancer Society. The primary goal of Relay is to recognize and honor cancer survivors. The survivorship celebration includes personal recognition of survivors from the long-term to the newly diagnosed, and special activities designed to convey to them that they are the Relay’s true VIP’s.
All cancer survivors will kick-off the Relay by walking the very first lap. This year’s theme is "Creating a World With More Birthdays!" If you are a survivor and wish to register for the Survivorship Celebration, you may do so at Relay night or by calling Community Director, Andrea Courville at the Lafayette American Cancer Society office, 237-3797 ext. 5
There is still time for you as an individual to participate in this worthwhile event. Team registrations are also still being accepted. If you and/or your company/business would like to join in on all the fun, contact Ms. Courville at the above number.
Angela Cassimere, Relay Chairperson promises that this year’s Relay will feature many fun activities for the entire family. The Opening ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m. A special Luminary ceremony will take place at 9:00 p.m. The committee plans to have games for all ages, athletic competitions, dance performances, a womanless beauty contest, tug of war, scavenger hunt, fun jump, Zydeco dance, live singing performances, D.J. and much more. Also available will be various Cajun dishes, jambalaya, BBQ pork steak sandwiches, sweet dough pies, pecan candy, sweets, burgers, and other items for sale. This event is open to the public. Stop by and have dinner with the family. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.
This year’s sponsors include: Opelousas General Health System's SPICE, Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino, Oncologics & Louisiana Oncology Associates.
Teams registered and participating on Friday night include: Cajun Fitness/TaeKwonDo Plus, Cardiovascular Institute of the South, City of Opelousas, Cub Scouts--Lawtell Pack 1010, Divas for a Cure, St. Landry Homestead Bank, Inseparable Friends and Benevolent Society--IFBS, Jules Joseph Family Reunion Team, Louisiana Oncology Associates, Northeast Elementary, Northwest High School Faculty and Staff, Northwest High School Student Body, Opelousas High School NJROTC, Opelousas High School Science Club, Opelousas City Court, The SPICE club of Opelousas General Health System, Opelousas Police Department, Park Vista Elementary, Prather Pediatric Asthma and Allergy Clinic, Southwest Elementary, St. Landry Parish School Board, St. Landry Parish Government, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Opelousas Sunrise Rotary, Leonville Elementary, Raisin' Canes, SuperOne Foods, First Baptist Church, and the Leonville Ladies Auxillary.
