Opelousas, LA., April 11, 2011, Opelousas General Health System opened the doors to the new Dr. Gerald E. Posner Center for Women’s Health on September 9, 2010. Under the direct supervision of Board Certified Radiologists, the goal was to provide a
state-of-the-art outpatient facility, conveniently located, designed to meet every woman’s diagnostic and imaging needs. To date, the Center has accomplished that goal and more. “We are very fortunate in our community to have technology available to our patients including digital mammography and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy”, said Dr. Richard Lastrapes, Radiologist.
The Posner Center provides a comprehensive suite of highly specialized medical diagnostic services including digital mammography, bone density, ultrasound and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy. Stereotactic Breast Biopsy is a new service and Opelousas General Health System is one of only a few health providers in the state to offer it. Stereotactic breast biopsy uses a special digital mammography unit that pinpoints the exact location of a breast mass by using a computer and x-rays taken from two different angles. A Radiologist then inserts a needle through the skin, advancing it into the lesion and removes the tissue samples. Patients experience little or no discomfort during the procedure. A Pathologist examines the removed specimen then makes a final diagnosis. Stereotactic breast biopsy differs from surgical biopsy in several ways. It is less invasive, can evaluate tiny masses not visible on ultrasound, provides accurate results and is done on an outpatient basis with brief recovery time. “Stereotactic Breast Biopsy has revolutionized breast biopsies specifically for micro calcifications which may be an early sign of malignancy. We are very fortunate to provide this service for our community,” said Lastrapes.
Opelousas General Health System is proud to report that since opening the doors to the Dr. Gerald E. Posner Center for Women’s Health, 3114 mammograms have been performed and 38 Stereotactic Biopsy procedures have been successfully completed. “Opelousas General Health System is ranked among the leading hospitals of our size in Louisiana. It is our commitment to excellence that drives our many successes”, said Gary I. Keller, President/CEO of OGHS. “Furthermore, it is worthy to note that through the Board leadership, OGHS has been on the forefront of deploying the most modern in medical technology for the past 25 years”, Keller added.
The Center was named after the late Gerald E. Posner, M.D., a well-respected physician in our community who served as a member of the OGHS medical staff for over 36 years. As an OB/GYN physician, he is credited with having introduced epidural anesthesia for childbirth to the Opelousas/St. Landry area in 1970 and delivered over 6,000 babies during his career. He completed an additional residency in Anesthesiology and continued to practice in that capacity for another ten years.
The Posner Center was funded through the OGHS Foundation Signature gifts from individuals in the community and OGHS employees.
