When asked to support the OGHS Foundation by making a signature gift to the Healthy Futures Campaign, Isabel Posner and Keith and Ginger Myers and their families came together to honor Dr. Gerald E. Posner. They decided to honor Dr. Posner's memory by choosing to name the Center for Women's Health with their signature gifts.

Dedicated. Charming. Articulate. Dignified. A Gentleman. These are just a few of the words that could be used to describe Dr. Gerald E. Posner. He was a well-known physician in our community who began his medical career as an obstetrician and later became an anesthesiologist. "Dad always felt that it was a privilege to help take care of the people of Opelousas and the surrounding areas. After he died, we wanted to honor his work with Opelousas General Hospital and all of the patients and families that he loved so much. This Center, to be named in Dad's memory, will accomplish that goal," said Dr. Mark Posner, son of Dr. Gerald E. Posner.

"During Dr. Posner's obstetrical practice, he delivered both Ginger and me. We wanted his memory to be extended through the hospital because it seemed like the honorable thing to do," said Keith Myers. "We couldn't imagine naming it after anyone else," Ginger replied. "We are so pleased to be a part of the Dr. Gerald E. Posner Center for Women's Health."

The Center for Women's Health, or the Posner Center as it may be called, will be a dedicated space and designed for women by women, with a patient-friendly atmosphere and state-of-the-art ultrasound, mammography, and biopsy equipment. IT will be located on the first floor near the entrance to the Women's Center and will be completely renovated to encompass many of the services related to women's health. One of the many benefits of the Center for Women's Health is that stereotactic breast biopsy equipment will be available, which is new to Opelousas. This is where a needle biopsy is performed in the Center using local anesthetic to sample an exact lesion. It is less invasive than previous biopsy techniques and patients are able to drive themselves home from the hospital after the procedure. In the past, these patients would have two options: biopsy through general surgery (which requires general anesthesia) or leave our community to have this procedure done in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Alexandria or beyond.

Opelousas General has been the preeminent regional provider of community healthcare for decades, due in large part to the foresight and compassion of physicians like Dr. Posner, a leading obstetrician and anesthesiologist who served the local community until his death in 2007. Friends of Dr. Posner have joined together to support his legacy through donations to make the Center for Women's Health a reality.

"I believe that a contribution to Opelousas General's campaign will make a lasting impression on the quality of healthcare in the community. I made my gift because I believe in Opelousas General and it was a way to honor my husband for his commitment to this community," stated Isabel Posner, wife of Dr. Gerald E. Posner. "This community deserves the very best. We intend to do what we can to help this project become a proud heritage for now and for future generations."

These individuals are leaving their signature on our community by supporting the enhancement of healthcare. Contributions to the Healthy Futures campaign are an investment in our community, and in the health of a large number of St. Landry Parish residents
