New Chief of Staff Elected at Opelousas General Health System
Opelousas, LA. August 26, 2010. The Medical Staff at Opelousas General Health System has elected Richard W. Harmon, M.D. as the new Chief of Staff of the 245-bed facility. Dr. Harmon will take over as head of the more than 250-member Physician and Allied Health team on September 1, 2010.
In his new two-year term as Chief of Staff, Dr. Harmon, a Family Practice physician, will work with the Administrative staff, Board of Trustees and Physicians to continue quality improvement efforts in the delivery of health care services to the more than 128,000 patients served annually at Opelousas General. He will direct the hospital’s credentialing and peer review processes and oversee the Medical Staff Executive Committee. He will also work on enhancing physician communication initiatives that were started by outgoing Chief of Staff, Dr. Derek Metoyer and represent the medical staff on strategic planning projects.
“Dr. Harmon’s experience combined with the dedication and commitment he has for Opelousas General Health System makes him an excellent candidate for this role,” says Gary Keller, President/CEO of Opelousas General Health System. “I commend the Medical Staff for making such an excellent choice,” he added.
“I am very proud to represent the Medical Staff of OGHS. I am honored that my colleagues have put their trust in my efforts. I will strive to enhance the standard in quality care that the hospital is committed to,” said Dr. Harmon. “I have practiced here for 28 years. Opelousas General is home to me,” he added.
Dr. Harmon received his MD from Louisiana State Medical Center in Shreveport, following a Bachelor’s of Science degree from LSU in Baton Rouge. Dr. Harmon completed his residency at Moss Regional Hospital in Lake Charles. He began his career in Family Practice in 1982. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice and the American Board of Hospice & Palliative Medicine.
In his spare time, Dr. Harmon enjoys photography and hunting. He is married to Pam and they have three children. He also has four adult children and two granddaughters.
