Medical Oncology

There are several non-surgical treatments for cancer. The Medical Oncologist specializes in these treatments and in the management of complications caused by cancer. Treatment planning is tailored to the particular type of cancer and the individual patient.

Medical Oncologists turn to chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other treatments, often in combination, to treat cancer.

Chemotherapy attacks cancer cells by using medicines introduced into the blood or body cavities. Immunotherapy uses medicines to help the body's defenses work harder to fight the cancer cells.

These treatments, sometimes combined with surgery and / or radiation therapy, are powerful tools in stopping or slowing cancer growth. Oncologists monitor patients' progress with physical examinations and laboratory screening, and work with primary physicians to develop the best care for the individual patient.
