Dr. Gerald E. Posner Center for Women’s Health
Achieving New Standards in Diagnostic Services…
Opelousas General Health System has created a new state-of-the-art outpatient facility, conveniently located on the main campus that is designed to meet every woman’s diagnostic and imaging needs. The Posner Center is staffed by highly trained patient-focused technologists, working under the direct supervision of OGHS Board Certified Radiologists.
Cutting-edge equipment produces high resolution radiology films with precision detailing and color graphics. Sophisticated information technology expedites processing and delivery of test results to referring physicians typically within 24 hours, either by hard copy or online.
Big City Medicine…Right Here At HomeStereotactic Breast Biopsy...Now Available At Opelousas General

While lumps or abnormalities are often detected by physical examination, mammography or other imaging studies, it’s not always possible to tell from these imaging tests whether a growth is benign or cancerous. The Posner Center offers the most sophisticated minimally invasive technology available for determining if you are at risk for breast cancer.
A special digital mammography unit is used to perform a stereotactic breast biopsy. Stereotactic mammography pinpoints the exact location of a breast mass by using a computer and e-rays taken from two different angles, the radiologist then inserts a needle through the skin, advancing it into the lesion and removes the tissue samples. Patients experience little or no discomfort during the procedure. An OGHS pathologist then examines the removed specimen and makes a final diagnosis.
Advantages:
- Less invasive than surgical biopsy.
- A way to evaluate tiny masses not visible on ultrasound.
- Performed on an outpatient basis.
- Results are as accurate as surgically removed tissue.
- Brief recovery time.

The Gerald E. Posner Center for Women’s Health is Named in Honor of Dr. Gerald E. Posner
Dr. Posner, a well-respected physician in our community, received his undergraduate degree from LSU in Business Administration at the age of nineteen. He then graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1951, followed by his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Posner entered private practice in Opelousas in 1955 and served as Chief of Staff at Opelousas General Hospital from 1958-1959. He is credited with having introduced epidural anesthesia for childbirth to the Opelousas/St. Landry area in 1970 and delivered over 6,000 babies during a 26-year career. As an avid student, he returned to Tulane in 1981 to complete an additional residency in Anesthesiology and continued to practice for the next ten years. Dr. Posner was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Opelousas General Hospital in 1971 and served until 1993.
Dr. Posner was very proud to serve his country during World War II and was one of the most decorated war veterans of St. Landry Parish. He was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star Medals, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Fourragere from the government of Belgium. Dr. Posner and his wife Isabel lived in Opelousas where they raised their four children, Donald, Lisa, Mark and Jennifer. |
