OPELOUSAS GENERAL HEALTH SYSTEM PRESENTS ST. LANDRY-EVANGELINE UNITED WAY WITH DONATION AT ANNUAL APPRECIATION BREAKFAST

June 3, 2011, Opelousas, La: The St. Landry-Evangeline United Way hosted its annual Appreciation Breakfast for donors and volunteers on June 1, 2011 at Opelousas General Health System. One of the highlights of the event was a presentation of $15,000 from the hospital’s foundation employee fund, known as SPICE (Special People In a Caring Environment). The donation was made to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a program of the United Way that provides free age-appropriate books to children between the age of 0-5, living in St. Landry or Evangeline parishes. The check was presented by OGHS President and CEO, Gary Keller and SPICE Committee President, Kim Richard.

“This donation given at this particular time was especially noteworthy because the keynote speaker was Dr. Billy Stokes from the Cecil Picard Center, an Early Childhood Education research arm of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His talk was related to Louisiana and St. Landry parish school readiness, reading scores and graduation rates,” noted Ginger LeCompte, Executive Director of St. Landry-Evangeline United Way. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library focuses on early childhood literacy, and currently has over 1400 children enrolled at a cost of $36 per year, per child. “While the program remains free to the children, we depend on the donations from businesses and individuals to sustain it,” says LeCompte. Donations can be sent to St. Landry-Evangeline United Way at P O Box 189 in Opelousas, La 70570.
