Cardiac Rehabilitation
Opelousas General Health System's Cardiac Rehabilitation services are designed to help patients with heart disease recover faster and return to productive lives. Cardiac Rehabilitation includes a program of exercise, diet, counseling and education to promote healthier lifestyles.
Cardiac Rehabilitation:
- provides exercise prescriptions to increase physical activity and fitness. The program offers medically supervised and EKG monitored exercise. A safe exercise program allows an individual to increase cardiac efficiency and do more with less effort.
- teaches patients about their disease and how to cope with its physical and psychological manifestations. Programs and individual counseling are available to help patients stop smoking, lose weight, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, control diabetes and reduce emotional stress.
- monitors the patient's progress and improves recovery, increases cardiovascular fitness and reduces the risk of new events. Most patients return to their usual activities within a few months after a heart attack or surgery.
Pulmonary Disease
Pulmonary disease is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. The most common pulmonary diseases are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, tuberculosis, lung cancer and adult cystic fibrosis.
More than one of every five persons in the United States has cardiovascular disease, with over 500,000 lives lost annually. An additional, 1,500,000 Americans suffer from heart attacks, usually striking individuals in their most productive years. Changes in exercise, diet and smoking habits may prevent or decrease the severity of heart disease. The goal of our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is to restore and maintain an individual's optimal physiological, psychological, social and vocational status.
Opelousas General Heath System: The only cardiac rehabilitation program in the region accredited by the AACVPR (American Association of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation).
